Project Introduction
The Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust is looking for a design proposal to create a welcoming and inspiring space within the 18th century stable block that will act as the visitor introduction to the main heritage venue. The space will need to meet a number of different functions for a varied group of potential users.
The space will need to meet a number of different functions for a varied group of potential users.
An introductory space to the Delapré Abbey “experience”, providing a flavour of what the Abbey has to offer the visitor and inspiring visitors to explore further. In this area there should be a display system for housing guide information and other visitor materials.
A reception area with desk (at least two pay points and a space to answer queries). Point of sale for tickets and merchandise, and work station for answering queries and managing activities.
Offer a dedicated retail space which will house a stand alone pop-up unit. (Separate brief for the Pop up Units)
Interpretative Display. Through a wall based exhibition piece, share the story of the Abbey, its gardens and links to the wider landscape / community of Northampton. Current proposal is a nine graphic art panel telling the stories of the Abbey.
A seating area for a minimum of 6 people.

The back wall of the reception desk takes the design concept of light and shadow, and the idea of laser cut contemporary furniture which combines wood and light. The pattern on the back wall was inspired by the elevation of Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust. There would be a pane of glass behind the laser cut wood board for fixing unsupported wood board. And inner LED panel light would create a more impressive reception.
The colourful lines would get visitors’ attention. Visitors could look through these boxes to know the story of Delapre Abbey. The display boxes could provide different heights for different age.
A wooden bookshelf on the wall would offer guide information and other visitors materials which could inspire visitors to explore further. The shape of bookshelf gives visitors direction.
The idea of the laser cut reception desk is same as the back wall.
At least two pay points and a space to answer queries as required.

These rotatable 'stumps' could be a display table and storage.
These stumps were inspired from Russian nesting dolls. They could be placed in any way you like.
The ‘tree’ is easy to assemble and disassemble.
